Hello You: Meet Heidi - Leading Operational Excellence

March 5, 2025

As part of the "Hello You" series, we’re handing the mic to colleagues across Orange Belgium—giving them the space to share their journeys, challenges, and the impact they make every day. This series highlights the people behind the innovation, the problem-solvers, and the driving forces shaping Orange Belgium.

Heidi Verhofstede is one of those voices. Her journey into tech wasn’t a straight line. Starting with a background in languages, she never imagined she’d one day be coordinating large-scale operations in a leading telecom company. But with curiosity as her compass, Heidi has built a 24-year career at Orange, growing from a technical expert into a leader who ensures operations run smoothly—even in the toughest of circumstances. Curious to know more? Let’s dive into her story.

Shaping operations with expertise

"My role is about connecting teams and setting up the right governance to get things done," she says. A key focus of her work is shaping and executing Orange Belgium’s Operational Partner Strategy, aligning technical and business objectives.

Heidi also highlights her additional and shared role in crisis management during incidents, emphasizing teamwork. Heidi ensures that internal teams are aligned, and swift actions are coordinated to quickly restore services. "By the time customers notice anything, the issue is often already resolved," she explains. Her role involves maintaining clear communication between field teams, management, and other stakeholders, ensuring efficient resolutions and keeping everyone informed.

Collaboration = the default setting

For Heidi, Orange Belgium’s culture is key to its innovation and success. "It’s the kind of place where you feel comfortable reaching out to anyone," she says. Whether it’s discussing ideas over coffee or jumping into a quick chat, collaboration happens naturally. If you’ve got a question, you just ask - it’s that simple," she says.

This open-door culture has been a constant throughout her 24 years. "When I joined, it felt like a startup—full of entrepreneurial energy. As we grew, we focused on creating solid processes. Now, we’re back to that pioneering spirit, but with the right structures to support it," she explains.

A passion for complex puzzles

What keeps Heidi hooked on tech isn’t just its pace—it’s the challenge! "Technology evolves so fast, and that’s what makes it fun. It’s like unraveling a dynamic puzzle—bringing clarity and transforming complexity into something smooth and innovative," she says with a smile.

Her journey into tech started with curiosity and grew thanks to Orange Belgium’s support. "I’ve never stayed in the same job for too long. At Orange, you’re encouraged to keep growing," Heidi explains. Training is hands-on and flexible, ranging from e-learning platforms where you set your own pace to workshops and expert-led sessions. "There’s always someone to guide you, whether it’s an external course at a business school or an internal training session."

Global horizons and local impact

Being part of the global Orange network is one of Heidi’s favorite aspects of her job. "You collaborate with people from diverse nationalities, learn how things are done differently, and gain a broader perspective," she shares. From training programs in France to cross-border collaborations, Heidi has embraced the international opportunities that come with being part of the Orange Group.

It’s all about people

Heidi’s story offers a fresh perspective on what working in tech can truly mean. "My role involves constant communication and relationship management. Whether I’m coordinating with field teams, working with project managers, or reporting to leadership, it’s all about connecting with people," she emphasizes.

Coming from a background in languages, she never imagined she’d one day lead large-scale operations in a telecom company. But her education gave her a foundation in communication and adaptability—skills that have proven invaluable in her role today.

"I work very transversally, meeting people from different domains and ensuring we collaborate effectively," she says. "Good teamwork is the key to success." This approach allows Heidi to connect teams and ensure that projects run smoothly, delivering real impact.

Why Orange stands out

When asked what sets Orange Belgium apart, Heidi points to its unique culture. "Orange is more than a workplace—it’s a place where you can grow," she says. Managers often act as mentors, guiding their teams and encouraging development. "There’s so much flexibility to evolve, try new things, and take on different roles."

For Heidi, the international opportunities have been especially rewarding and, as she holds a linguistic education, the global context of Orange is a playground to her. "You’re not just part of Orange Belgium—you’re part of a global network," she adds.

Words to live by

"Stay curious and don’t be afraid to ask questions." She believes a career in tech is about adapting and learning, not just having a technical background.

Heidi’s journey at Orange demonstrates how being part of an international group, combined with a strong support system and sound ambition, can lead to an impactful career!
