Orange proudly empowers women in tech
2 May 2023
Recruiting women for technical positions is a challenge. We are trying to tackle this by implementing various support initiatives to not only increase the recruitment and retention of women in technical roles. We also want to raise awareness of these roles among young girls and students.
That’s why we invited the WomInTech community for a ‘One Day Internship’. In a nutshell: we showed 16 female students the endless possibilities of working in tech, and what jobs are perfect for their tech-savvy brains.
Short recap of the day
After all the hungry stomachs had been fed with a delicious breakfast, it was time to feed the hungry minds. First stop: our Cyber Experience Center. This is where Orange Cyberdefense helps companies discover the impact of a simple click on a “phishy” link. Spoiler: it’s huge – our participants were shocked to say the least. “I was aware of phishing, but I hadn't given it much thought. It was really interesting to see how big it can get and how damaging it can be to companies”, said one of the students.
As Orange has a heart for innovation, we couldn’t resist visiting the Orange 5G Lab in Antwerp. Here, start-ups, mid-size and large companies can discover, test and develop new, groundbreaking applications of standalone 5G in real-life conditions. Think robotic arms, self-driving rail vehicles, an augmented field worker… The sky is the limit in our innovative 5G Lab.
Next up was a visit to the center that controls our network as well as the laboratory where we develop our TV & Internet products and services. We ended the day with an informal chat with our own female engineers. Who better to explain our technical jobs than the colleagues who enjoy doing it every day?
